but they do not know what they are talking about
or what they so confidently affirm.”
Why do you pull weeds in your garden? Because they will choke out the flowers; they will push out the good plants you wanted to grow.
Do you ever pull weeds in your life? The things of God don’t stir you the way they once did? It no longer concerns you that people may die without the Lord? No time for prayer? Watch out! The bad will choke out the good ... the things of this world can choke out the things of God. Everything is twisted in this world. The things we can see with our eyes are generally not the things that matter. The things of God’s kingdom will matter for eternity.
Paul writes to Timothy, “I asked you to stay longer in Ephesus when I went into Macedonia so you could command some people there to stop teaching false things.” (1 Timothy 1:3)
This is written about BELIEVERS! Paul and Timothy had to tell them to stop teaching false doctrine. Paul says that a believer’s foundation should be love, which comes from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith. Paul was helping Timothy through a time of discouragement as Timothy tried to pastor a church. His church was imploding as individuals set themselves up as experts in the law, challenging his authority and ministry. They were denying the deity of Jesus. Paul encourages Timothy to persevere and to instruct the people with sound doctrine.
What changed when Jesus came into your life? If there is no change, maybe Jesus never really did come into your heart and life. Christians should live life victoriously. It starts with our attitudes. We could wear ourselves out with our own thoughts! When we have negative thoughts, we could choose to praise the Lord.
Good gardens and perfect lawns don't grow naturally. Weeds do. We can either allow weeds of selfishness to grow or we can get to work. With God’s help, we can remove the weeds and cultivate the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
We’re only as ready to have God in our lives as we are ready to name and face our defects of character. What is in your life that is in the way of living victoriously? Confess it to God. Ask Him to remove it. Pray, “Grant me a willing spirit. Lord, make me entirely ready to have You remove all of my defects of character!”
Going through the motions doesn’t please God. We learn true worship when our pride is shattered. The sacrifice God wants from each of us is a broken spirit. God will not reject a heart that is broken and sorry for sin. When we let go of our own plans, desires, thoughts, and ways and just trust the Lord and follow His leading, that is the beginning of living our lives as God intended for us to live them ... victoriously!
Heavenly Father, please help us to be dependent on You and trust in whatever You have planned for us. Please help us to remember that the little things matter. We don’t have to do big things for You to make something big out of it. Every day, help us to connect with You so we can live the amazing lives You planned for us. Amen.
